Missing

The Pair server that contains the database where my and Vardibidian's journals are stored crashed early this morning, taking its disk with it. Pair restored from their backup, but the backup was 24 hours old. So everything posted yesterday is irretrievably gone.

Well, okay, that's not quite true. Comments get emailed to us, so we can reinstate those fairly easily, and the one entry I posted during that time had made it to LiveJournal before the crash, so I re-posted it using the LJ text. Unfortunately, Vardibidian irretrievably lost a couple of entries, and there's nothing that can be done about that.

My first thought was kicking myself for still not having set up a weekly backup script. My second thought was that a weekly backup wouldn't have helped; even a daily backup would only have helped if it ran between the time of last posting and the time of the crash.

Unfortunate.

Journal posting is a relatively infrequent affair (even if done multiple times a day). Depending on how the system is set up, you could trigger a backup whenever you “post” an entry. Better yet, you could do incremental backups (even crudely, have a script transmit a copy of the just-posted post to some other location, preferably on another machine).

Clearly, Vardibidian needs an LJ feed.

The scary thing is, I noticed earlier today that some of the comment numbers were lower than I remembered them being (but I assumed there was some good reason for it and didn’t ask). . . . I think that’s a sign that I spend waaay too much time online.

Or, I could just keep a copy of my entries, since I’m typing them in a word processor anyway. Just laziness on my part, coupled with the low value of the lost wisdom.

    Thanks,
    -V.
