Year’s Bests

We stopped by Books Inc after dinner tonight, and saw that the new Year's Best Fantasy & Horror was out. I'd had four Year's Bests in my cart at Powell's, awaiting the arrival of this one before I ordered, but since the local bookstore had all four of them, I went ahead and bought them. (The local bookstore didn't have the new Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed., so when I came home I ordered that and a used copy of Four Ways to Forgiveness from Powell's.)

I was pleased to see that Ellen & Terri drew from their usual wide range of sources, both in what they chose to reprint and in their Honorable Mentions list. The latter includes eight SH stories, at least seven Polyphony stories, all four Rabid Transit stories (from the 2002 volume, of course), at least two apiece from Ideomancer and say..., at least one apiece from Full Unit Hookup and Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, and a whole bunch from gothic.net.

There are at least fifteen stories (that we didn't publish) by authors we've published, and a dozen or so more by authors who I like and have had some direct contact with but who we haven't published, at least not yet.

Meanwhile, I just stumbled across andyhat's 2002 Consolidated Recommended Reading List—he compiles these lists from a variety of sources (including Rich Horton's year-end summaries, Tangent Online's recommended reading list, and so on), and then tries to read as many of them as he can before the deadline for the Locus Poll voting. The 2002 list contains nearly 500 stories (of all lengths and speculative-fiction genres), with links to those available online, including 15 SH stories. Cool beans.
