Weekend
The last three or four times Kam and I have watched movies together, she's said, "Maybe we ought to check a plot summary or something to find out whether this one is tragic," and I've said, "Nah, I'm sure it's fine," and then it's turned out to be tragic.
Friday night I decided what I really needed was a light fluffy entertaining movie. Fortunately, Netflix had recently sent me the Branagh Love's Labour's Lost, the one which is part Shakespeare, part 1930s musical, and part MovieTone Newsreel. Very stylized, very odd, occasionally entertaining, a fair bit of wacky fun, and some nice musical numbers (Cole Porter and Gershwin songs and such).
And then fifteen minutes before the end of the movie, and fifteen minutes after the plot (such as it is) seemed to have ended, a character's father suddenly dies, out of the blue.
(I realize that's sort of a spoiler, but knowing it ahead of time seems to me to be really unlikely to spoil your enjoyment of the movie.)
I stopped the movie there and went to bed. Saturday morning I saw the rest of it, and actually liked the ending quite a bit; probably more than the rest of the movie. I think most of my favorite lines are in that sequence (the last scene of the play). Thanks to Chris, SarahP, and Michael for discussion of the movie and the play in comments last month.
Anyway. Saturday morning I picked up Kam at the airport; we went to Jeremy F's birthday party for a couple hours. (It was a potluck, so at Kam's suggestion, we stopped at Just Laziz Lebanese restaurant in San José and picked up some yummy manakeesh for the party, which was very well received.) I spent the rest of the afternoon with Kendra, who's in town briefly; then Kam came over in the evening. I was pretty much asleep on my feet by around 10 pm, but managed to be semi-mobile long enough to go hot-tubbing. Relaxing and sleepy end to a long but enjoyable day.
This morning, went to brunch with Kam and Susan G, then talked with Susan for a couple hours while Kam worked on the geodesic dome that she's building for Burning Man. This evening, picked up Lola at the airport (everyone's traveling lately); had dinner with Kam and Lola, then we ended up watching Lilo & Stitch, partly 'cause Lola hadn't seen it before and partly 'cause Kam and I last watched it about a year ago so it was time to see it again. Still totally charming, still amazingly quirky (how did they ever get Disney to make this movie?), still very funny. Still very sad in parts, but at least the parents' deaths happened before the movie started. Still made me cry, still made me laugh. Good stuff. And one of the very few movies I've ever seen a third time.
So now here it is Sunday night and I haven't done my magazine reading for the week, or finished writing up my WorldCon notes, or done any of the NASFiC planning I need to do. (One of the reasons I've been tense about making NASFiC plans is that it's in SeaTac, so presumably I should go see family while I'm up there, and try to deal with any remaining stuff that needs to be dealt with (like taking another pass through all those boxes of books).)
Still, it was a good weekend. And oddly relaxing despite all of the socializing.
