Malagasy names

Interesting post from 2019 about people’s names in Madagascar.

It’s written by a French person who had been living in Madagascar for ten years, so it’s framed in terms of comparison to Western names: “why Malagasy names are so long.” So there are some aspects that are presented as unusual that aren’t at all unusual in some contexts; for example, it notes that Malagasy names were traditionally mononyms (though it says that that’s less common now).

But the core idea is that Malagasy names are usually “some sort of a short phrase which contains will of good fate and personal heritage.”
