stroad

When I first encountered the word stroad (sometime in the past couple years), I was certain it was a typo. So I looked it up. And it turns out that nope, a stroad is “a thoroughfare that combines the features of streets and roads.”

Which confused me further, because in my usage, street and road are largely synonymous.

But Wikipedia’s entry for street says that “city residents and urban planners draw a significant modern distinction: a road's main function is transportation, while streets facilitate public interaction.” So, for example, a highway is a road, not a street.
