Returns

You know how they say "Many Happy Returns"? Well, there were two happy returns yesterday.

I'd known for some time that Kam would be returning from her two-week trip to Spain yesterday, and I was pleased that she was going to be back in time for my birthday. I was about to post something here yesterday morning saying something like "Welcome back, Kam!" when I got a phone call. From Mary Anne. Saying that she was on her way to California, to visit me and David H. for our shared birthday.

So, welcome back to California, Kam and Mary Anne!

I'm immensely pleased.

I'm also immensely pleased that the weather predicted for tomorrow's small party-in-the-park has been improving steadily for the past two weeks or so. It was initially going to be partly cloudy, about 68 degrees, with a 10% chance of rain. Now it's listed as mostly sunny, about 73 degrees(!), with a 0% chance of rain. Which sounds like perfect weather to me.

I know, I know, can't rely too much on weather prediction. But if there's a hurricane or an ice storm or something tomorrow, we can just retreat to my apartment. I'll dump the stacks of paper in my room and close the door to make it semi-presentable.

Also pleased that about 15 people have RSVPd in the affirmative; I had thought for a while that, given the short notice, there'd probably be only two or three people there. (Which would've been fine, but still glad to see more.)

I invited a dozen or so co-workers, which always feels a little awkward to me. I don't know any of them well (except one who I know from outside work); mostly I invited them because I like them and figured that after nearly four years at this job it might be time to gradually start making friends with a select few of my co-workers. Wouldn't want to rush into anything. But I don't think any co-worker of mine has ever attended one of my parties (except Arthur, which is different because at the time he was a co-worker he was also my housemate); even friends who happen to be co-workers somehow never manage to make my parties while we're working at the same company. So I didn't actually expect any of my co-workers to come, but I also didn't want to discourage them from coming by saying that I didn't expect them to come. Which probably means that I was thinking about this way too much. So I finally just sent the invite. But since I sent a separate mailing to co-workers, at least one of them thought that I'd only invited co-workers to the party. . . . Oh, well.

Okay, speaking of work, I gotta get moving.

Happy birthday to David H. and Jessica E.! (They probably won't see this, but you never know.) And many happy returns.
