BART to SFO!

Hey, cool! The BART extension to SFO opens this coming weekend!

For those of you who don't live around here, that means it'll suddenly be pretty trivial to get to the San Francisco airport from downtown SF or Oakland or Berkeley or anywhere else BART goes. (Which doesn't, alas, include the lower peninsula; if I want to get to SFO, I still have to drive or take CalTrain and then a shuttle bus.) That also means if visiting friends without their own transportation want to meet up with me, I can pick them up at SFO after work rather than driving all the way over to Colma (which inevitably results in my getting lost, and (for example) leaving my guest-to-be standing in the cold for 45 minutes).

(Yes, guests can currently take CalTrain and I can pick them up right near where I work, or near home for that matter. But BART is a lot more convenient from downtown SF (the CalTrain station is about a 20-minute walk from downtown), and from the East Bay there's never been a convenient way to get directly to the peninsula by public transit before. Also, the new Millbrae station will provide a convenient way to switch over from BART to CalTrain, for those so inclined.)

We Philadelphians are envious; they’re still threatening to cut SEPTA’s regional rail line to the airport for next year’s budget (starting in July, I think). No one has any idea how serious a threat that is. . . .

That’s just nutty. I lived in Philly; I remember being delighted with how civilized it was to be able to take an inexpensive train out to the airport. Pfui on them for even thinking about cutting it.

Thanks for the notice, Jed. You can’t imagine how happy that makes me and my family. (I read the title of the journal entry to my husband and he cheered) As a former Bay Area resident, and still frequent flyer in and out of the Bay Area, it makes life heck a easier.
