TMS for editors
It occurs to me that transcranial magnetic stimulation, which (its proponent says) lets you "[see] what's actually there, not what you think is there," might be a big boon for people doing line-editing; a big part of the job is being able to look at the words and punctuation that are actually on the page rather than the ones you expect to see.
Though I suppose another way to put that would be that good line-editors already have a certain amount of that single-minded quasi-autistic focusing ability.
And, of course, there's lots more to editing than that; you have to be able to see the whole as well as the parts, and there are always euphony and style and character voice and individual author preferences and house styles to take into account. Among other things.
