Congratulations to Greg van Eekhout, a.k.a. the Official Voice of the American People, whose story "Will You Be an Astronaut?" has qualified for next year's preliminary Nebula ballot!

Also congratulations to Wendy Shaffer, whose story "Portrait of an Unidentified Angel (1610)" has been accepted by Realms of Fantasy! It's Wendy's first Campbell-eligible sale. Realms has provided the first Campbell-eligible sale for a few other good "new" writers this year (hi, y'all!); I'm very pleased. I really need to start reading that magazine regularly; judging by what they've been buying, it's probably closer to my tastes now than it was last time I read a full issue.

I got curious about how many first Campbell-eligible sales each of the Big Four has published in the past couple years; occurred to me that it's trivial to count, by just looking at the first sale listed for each eligible author. (Though that's not a completely comprehensive list. But it's probably close.) In 1997-2002 combined, Analog published sixteen first eligible sales (five of those in 1997), Asimov's six, F&SF twenty (but only one in 2002), and Realms eleven (including four in 2002). Make of that what you will.

    I will become Campbell-eligible in about a week. My Campbell first sale was to REALMS (which has now bought two stories from me, though neither has appeared yet), but my first Campbell-eligible print appearance, which I believe is the actual criterion, will be in WRITERS OF THE FUTURE XIX.

    With a 15,700 science fantasy, of all things…

    They’re missing a few, I think, from my research earlier this year. (Asimovs: Allison, Tavis
    Analog: Foss, Richard; Kirkland, Kyle; Levites, Kevin; and Winkles, Billy Bruce.) And I think those are all 2002 sales, because I didn’t bother counting the 2001s (one in each magazine, I think) because they won’t be eligible by the next time it matters.

    Congrats to all the writers!

    I’d think that Writers of the Future, however, would have published the most amount of first Campbell-nominated stories. But it’s not considered one of the Big Four, of course. I’d be curious if folks don’t send their stories to it because of the Scientology connection. If so, they needn’t worry. There’s no overlap, other than the fact that you may stay at a hotel full mostly of Scientologists during the workshop during the workshop week. Lots of good story material in that, let me tell ya.

    And our Jay is off to that workshop soon! Go Jay!
