Snippets

Three unrelated items:

  • At the party tonight, two older gentlemen were playing and singing "The Union Maid," or at least the chorus: "Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union 'til the day I die." Made me want to go ask them to tell union stories, but I was immersed in conversation and they were having too good a time to interrupt anyway.
  • On the way home, I tuned in to Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me! on NPR. I intended to only listen for a minute and then switch to iPod tunes, but the first guy who called in was named Jedediah, and the host and the guests kept saying the name over and over and talking about what a great name it was, and how much fun it was to say, so I kinda had to keep listening. The host said it was too bad he'd already named his second daughter, or he'd name her Jedediah just so he could say the name a lot. I was amused.
  • It's Sunday the 17th now. Today would've been my mother's 60th birthday.

Oh, good, you caught that episode of “Wait, Wait”! Stephen & I thought of you when we heard it.

Whenever I come across “The Union Maid”, I always think of a Pete Seeger recording we have of Woody Guthrie’s “Ladies Auxiliary”. (What’s wrong with “The Union Maid”? We wrote that for you. But they said it wasn’t dignified enough. And besides, it didn’t have “ladies auxiliary” in the chorus. So we wrote ’em a song:)

Oh the Ladies’ Auxiliary is a good auxiliary
It’s the best auxiliary that you ever did see.
If you need an auxiliary see the Ladies’ Auxiliary–
    It’s the Ladies’ Auxiliary!

    Sorry for the sidetrack…
