Quick update

On the one hand, only minimal Net access.

Also, as far as I can tell, all the mail that I send is being silently thrown away, which makes me extremely unhappy. Particularly since that apparently includes all autoresponse confirmations of receiving stories. I'll see if I can re-send everything from New Jersey tomorrow. If you're waiting for mail from me, I apologize.

On the other hand, I got to wander around the Swarthmore campus this afternoon, visited an old friend and former manager (one of the computing center staff) who I haven't seen in years, saw all the new and under-construction science buildings (and the new dorm they're starting work on), tried to visit an old professor (she wasn't there, but we spent a while looking at the photos, sorted chronologically, of everyone associated with the linguistics dept. over the past 15 years or so), then in the evening attended a lovely long roundsing (9 other people showed up despite short notice and despite the fact that they're having another one on Sunday. Yay! And I had forgotten just how much better the belltower's acoustics make things), then hung out with Josh B and Jim M and Melissa R for a while afterward. So life is mostly pretty good, except for the online part of life.

Didn't make it down to the Crum. Oh, well; next time.

Sorry I couldn’t make it down to Swat while you were in town. I’ve got classes Wednesday and Thursday nights this term. Next time…

Jed…you took Linguistics? Never knew that. It’s half my major. 🙂

I got mail from you… Even replied 🙂 Did you get my reply, I wonder.

If you are still at Swat, and you run into a professor Chris Burns in the astro dept., you must give him my love 🙂

If you ask nicely and the sky is clear, he can easily be convinced to give you a tour.

Hey is that comment #4 from the Naomi who went to Carleton? Jed mentioned that there’s a writerly cabal of Carleton people…which I’m interested in ’cause I went there too–class of ’89. My husband was graduated in ’91.

Sorry to miss you, Will! Yes, next time.

Leah: yup, one of my majors was “computational linguistics,” which was (in my case) basically just a mix of half a linguistics major and half a CS major.

Alas, Naomi, I haven’t met Chris Burns. I’ll ask people if they know him, though.

Sarah: Never heard anyone call it “sweat more,” but may well be a common phrase among other social groups than mine, dunno. And nope, that comment was from a different Naomi—the Carleton Naomi is Naomi Kritzer.
