Assorted updates
Various things:
- Finally put my latest sf story in the mail today.
- Finally updated my finances. It turns out I may have just barely enough money to pay the handyman at the end of the week. I hope.
- Speaking of whom, he did some more work on my house today, and he says he'll be done by the end of the month, which is to say the end of the week. It sounds plausible.
- Because he seems to be making progress, tonight I wrote and printed out and signed my 30 days' notice letter for my current apt. I've never written one of these before. Scary. Especially 'cause I've been here for just over six years now; I've never been fond of change. Anyway, I'll be mailing it (along with my last rent check for the foreseeable future, knock on wood) tomorrow.
- Ordered Mac OS X 10.3, a.k.a. Panther, from MacConnection, because it costs $10 less than from Apple, and then they give you a $20 mail-in rebate, and though they do charge for shipping, they don't charge sales tax. So overall I think it's about $30 cheaper (if I remember to mail in the rebate form) than from Apple. Note that this rebate offer applies only if you buy Panther before 10/31. (One of the other Mac catalogs made a big mistake: they listed the price for Panther on the front of the catalog as $199 instead of their actual price for it, $119. Oops.) The box containing the software is currently in Fresno; I love online shipment-tracking systems. Hoping it'll reach me by Tuesday.
- Obtained the Britannica 2004 DVD recently. I'm still amazed that you can get the entire contents of Encyclopædia Britannica on one CD-sized object, for under $50. The interface isn't as nice as the 2002 edition, but it works under OS X, and it's not terrible. (I haven't looked closely at the 2003 edition, so I'm not sure how that compares to this.) It's definitely a ported Windows app, which is annoying, but I can live with it.
