Sick

Had a tuna sandwich and a banana at a little food stand near the Exploratorium yesterday around lunchtime, and boy was it a mistake.

By midafternoon, I was feeling queasy and headachey; we left the Exploratorium and wandered around looking at birds on the little pond there for a while (I took a brief video clip of two coots fighting in the water), then headed back to Half Moon Bay. I declined the offer of dinner, because I was so exhausted I didn't think I'd be safe driving home if I stayed longer.

Came home, went to bed. Read, napped fitfully, suffered various forms of gastrointestinal distress. I think it's been years since last time I threw up; I can now report that it's still no fun.

I think I was feverish for much of the middle part of the night. Various body parts ached; I felt like a puzzle with missing pieces. I became convinced that it was of the utmost importance to determine whether it was true that some people had souls and others didn't. (I was pretty sure it had something to do with a coin-weighing puzzle I'd heard that morning on Car Talk. Given a person with a soul and a person without a soul, how can you tell which is which in a single weighing?) Also, a song I don't like ran through my head nonstop for several hours. I'm pretty sure there was some sleeping somewhere in there, a couple hours here and there; possibly even more total sleep than I've had in any one night since I moved in, as I haven't been sleeping much or well most of the time.

I'm feeling very slightly better this morning, but not a lot. Too restless to stay in bed at the moment, but I'm guessing that's where I'll end up fairly soon.

If I could remember the name of the place where we ate, I'd try to contact them and let them know they've got a problem with their food. I'm guessing it was the tuna, but the banana may not've been entirely ripe. But I would think that wouldn't still be bothering me eighteen hours later.

At any rate, it was lovely to see Nao & Stephen, and I wish I'd been up for a longer visit.

    *get well wishes*

But … I … have to ask about something else. Did they give the answer to the “ten stacks of coins, one of which is counterfeit and weighs either more or less than real coins, determine which stack is counterfeit with only one weighing” puzzler?

oooh. sympathies on the food poisoning. though the bit about the song you hate running through your head amused me — for some reason, my brain does this to me too when i am violently ill. the more annoying and repetitive the song, the better.

food poisoning can make you feel miserable for up to 36 hours: a large part of that is dehydration. flat soda or peppermint tea (or ginger, or any other mild herbal tea) with plenty of honey or sugar are all good things. saltines or other mild salty crackers may help too.

i hope you feel much better soon.

Thanks for the well-wishes. After another three or four hours of fitful sleep, during which I was sure that I had to release a statement about whether we were accepting submissions from 11 to noon today, and/or from noon to 1, I’m feeling significantly better. Time for a little food, I think (I haven’t eaten anything but some dried apple slices in the past 24 hours), and some tea (good idea, Naomi! Couldn’t quite bring myself to drink any last night, but should have).

As for the coins puzzle, they didn’t give the solution (’cause it’s this week’s puzzler, so people can send in answers to try to win when they announce the answer next week), but it’s an old one; the Rec.puzzles Archive (an incredibly useful resource in general) contains a slight variant. See the weighing puzzles section; specifically, “weighing/box” on that page. (The one from Car Talk is a very slight generalization from that, I believe.) Also on that page, weighing/gummy bears is a more complex variant.

Feel better soon, Jed. My recommendation for post-g-i-flu dehydration is cherry Kool-Aid. Maybe ‘cos it brings your blood sugar right up.

    Oh, no!

Now I feel unreasonably guilty. (After all, I didn’t make the stupid sandwich.)

But it was lovely to see you anyway!

I hope you’re feeling better and haven’t caught my nasty cold…
