Garth points to an interesting article on Richard Nixon and the Quakers; it's perhaps a bit too glib and simplistic in its pop-psych analysis of Nixon's entire life and psychology in terms of the Revivalist Quaker environment in which he grew up and the struggle against Evil Enemies, but it's got some interesting stuff in it nonetheless.
“the varying reports of Nixon’s response [to World War Two] offer a microcosm of the difficulty with truth-telling which was a hallmark of his public statements.” I like that.
Interesting stuff about the dilution of Quakerism in Indiana by, e.g., evangellical Methodism; especially the KKK part. Then of course there’s Billy Graham’s belief that the Nixon revealed in the White House tapes was under the influence of Satan. I could buy that.
Still — real Quakers don’t carpet-bomb.
