Hugo nomination details

In case anyone's interested, the details of this year's Hugo nominations have been posted, listing the top 15 candidates (in terms of number of nominations) in each category.

Unlike the situation last year, this year there aren't any categories where someone or something I was enthusiastic about came within a couple votes making the ballot. But I'm pleased to see a bunch of SH authors in the top 15 nominated for the Campbell. (But they spelled your name wrong, Sarah! I've now dropped them a note suggesting that they correct that.)

I continue to be disappointed by the low turnout for nominations. For short stories, only 15 stories got 10 or more nominations. Partly that's 'cause a lot of stories were nominated, so the number of nominators who agree on any particular story is likely to be fairly low. Still, only about 300 people nominated in that category at all.

Remember next year that all of you who attended this year's WorldCon are automatically eligible to nominate! Unfortunately, next year voting turnout is likely to be especially low, as usual when WorldCon is outside the US.

Someday I'd still like to do a followup to George Flynn's seminal Hugo-voting-statistics article, but it seems increasingly unlikely that I'll ever get around to that. Anyone else want to do it?

Hey Jed, go back and look at George’s article. Sure things like Australian Worldcons have low voting turnout. They have very few members. But Intersection had more members and more voters than LoneStarCon 2. With any luck next year we’ll do even better.

Good point; I stand corrected. I was looking at the general trend for overseas WorldCons without noticing where in particular they were. Thanks for the correction!
