Strange blue attractor

Kam took a couple of movie clips of me spinning glow poi in the dark the other night, but there wasn't enough light to see me at all, so it's just the poi going round and round as if by themselves. Which is an interesting enough effect, just not what I was hoping for.

But it occurred to me tonight that I could adjust exposure time on my camera to get those cool swirly poi photos. Kam's not around, but my camera has a timer, and I have a little mini-tripod.

So I went out on the back porch and played with the camera and the poi for a while, and then uploaded the photos to my computer and did some contrast/brightness adjustments, and the result is a small set of glow-poi photos. Mostly taken while I was doing a weave (which is why they're so similar to each other); I also took some non-weave ones, but those didn't come out as well.

Even the ones I posted aren't all that great; they would indubitably have been better if (a) taken by a human rather than a timer, and (b) the human knew what they were doing with cameras (unlike me). But if you've been wondering how the poi look when I'm spinning 'em, you can get some sense of it from these photos.

I didn’t know you could get fermented taro root to glow in the dark.

    That’s wicked cool, Jed!

I saw my friend-who-juggles the other day and asked him what ‘poi’ are, and he ‘splained. Neato!

I’ve been wistful about the links broken by the demise of picasa, but the poi pattern ones in particular I’m sad about.

I still have the photos; at some point I’ll put them up in a SmugMug gallery, and will change the link from this page.
