Happy birthday, SH!
It just occurred to me that September 1 marked the 7th anniversary of the launch of Strange Horizons.
Happy birthday, magazine!
I know I say this every time I talk about the magazine, but I'm going to say it again: it astonishes me that for seven years, we've put new material online every single week, except for a week of vacation at the end of each year. That now comes to over 350 weekly "issues" (though I've always been hesitant to call them that).
As always, that's been made possible primarily by three groups of people:
- The staff--currently about 40 unpaid and largely unsung volunteers, spread out around the world; also another 50+ former staff members.
- The writers and artists who've created the material we publish.
- The donors who've funded all this.
And of course the magazine owes its success to others too: our readers; the reviewers who've reviewed what we've published; the Year's Best editors who've reprinted stuff we've published; the people who've nominated and voted for the magazine and things we've published for various awards; the writers and artists who we haven't published but who've nonetheless said good things about us; a few big-name authors and editors who've said nice things about us; the bloggers who've publicized our fund drives; the people who've attended our parties; even the web hosting company we use. Plus others I'm sure I'm forgetting. We like to think of the people connected with the magazine as a community, and it's one I'm proud to be a part of.
Thanks, everyone, for a great seven years!
