Captain America
Finally saw Captain America tonight, and enjoyed it quite a bit.
Not by any means a Great Film. But fun, and occasionally funny, and very pleasing in its reworking of but respect for the comics.
Only one especially prominent female character, of course, but that's no surprise by now, and at least in this case she's tough and actiony.
I was especially pleased by all the nods to comics and connections to the other recent Marvel films. I was delighted to see the original Human Torch in a cameo at the Stark Expo (especially since Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, previously played the modern-era Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies, where I didn't like him nearly as much as I do here (he was also fun in Scott Pilgrim, btw)), and later to see the Howling Commandos show up (though mildly disappointed that there was no obvious connection between them and Nick Fury). And the Howard Stark stuff was nicely done. And the final post-credits scene, essentially a preview for the forthcoming Avengers movies, made me grin. I suspect it's going to be a lot of fun.
I'm intrigued by what I suspect are hints (in Captain America) about the origin and nature of the “tesseract” (which I'm thinking is a reimagining of the Cosmic Cube through the lens of the Thor movie) and the Red Skull's fate. Especially since I think I caught a glimpse of Loki in the Avengers preview.
Oh, and in Captain America I especially enjoyed watching Stanley Tucci as Dr. Erskine and Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Phillips. Hugo Weaving is fun too.
IMDB says that cameos were planned for Namor, Wolverine, and Magneto, but they were cut for various reasons. Too bad.
