First, an It Gets Better video from some gay Orthodox Jewish guys. Heartfelt and compelling. (9 min) (via Shmuel)
Second, an excellent new NoH8 video (2½ min), featuring a bunch of celebrities talking about how our homophobic culture implicitly supports bullying.
And a certain bit of that video is especially compelling to me not just for what it says but for who says it. These lines:
Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future [. . .] They can't serve our country openly. [. . .] Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens.
are spoken by none other than Cindy McCain, John McCain's wife.
She has spoken out before in favor of marriage equality, and she's previously participated in a NoH8 ad, but this is the first time I've seen her explicitly criticize the US government for its handling of LGBT issues. I'm very pleased.
(Her husband, btw, says he “respects the views of members of his family but remains opposed to gay marriage.” I gather that was from a statement in response to her first NoH8 ad; I'm not sure whether he's responded publicly to this new video.)
