Mary Anne not in Sri Lanka

In case anyone was worried (regarding the earthquake and tsunami), Mary Anne isn't in Sri Lanka; she's currently flying to Philadelphia for the South Asian Literary Association (SALA) Conference, followed by the Modern Language Association (MLA) Conference. She'll be doing an insane number of interviews for a couple days at MLA, and then it's off to Vermont for the beginning of her teaching stint there, then back home to Chicago. Her trip to Sri Lanka isn't for another couple months yet.

Most of M's relatives are in the US at this point. If I understood right, her immediate family is currently vacationing somewhere in the American Southwest, so she hasn't talked with them yet.

The bad news is that the death toll continues to mount (currently about 10,000 people according to a CNN article). But there's no need to worry about Mary Anne's safety.

    Good luck for her getting out of Philadelphia. Hopefully she didn’t take US Airways. We were supposed to leave from that airport on Christmas day and three flights later we’re still stuck here. We’re going to try one more flight tomorrow before we give up.

    Not to mention that we have no idea what happened to our baggage that we checked in yesterday.
