This and that, part 2

(I retroactively decided to split this entry into two pieces, due to sheer length. I hope it doesn't cause any problems with LJ.)

(If you already read the long one-part version, I haven't changed anything, just split the entry in half.)

Chatted some with Mary Anne now and then over the past week. I'm going to head out to Chicago for Thanksgiving. I know, I know, I said I was never leaving home again after that last bout of travel, and this'll be, what, my fourth Chicago visit this year? But it'll be good to see her, and it's only for a couple days, and it won't be as heavy on the socializing as most of my recent travel has been, and in theory we're going to set aside some time for writing, which is something I haven't done in months. Some nights I start to think through the plot of my current story-in-progress after I go to bed, but I never seem to get very far before I fall asleep. (Yeah, yeah, insert joke here about my plot putting people to sleep.)

I've been spending way too much time on political news, stopping by pollster.com and fivethirtyeight a few times a day, and fiddling with the interactive charts, and reading their news items, and so on. Two and a half more weeks and I can put the election toys down.

Saw my first Yes On 8 lawn sign today, a couple blocks from here. Made me grumpy. Tempted to put up a No On 8 lawn sign, except that the only public-facing lawn is owned by the whole complex, and I'm not up for having that conversation with my neighbors right now.

At work, I've been pretty unhappy and unproductive lately, but there've been some recent changes that have made me happier, and two or three times recently I've had lunch sitting outside in the sun and reading Asimov's on my iPhone, which is much happier-making than having lunch at my desk as I usually do. And Wednesday at work my group had a boardgames party; we ended up mostly playing Boggle (I would've said "we're writers, what do you expect," but it turned out that about half of them had never played before), but a few of us stuck around afterward to play MarraCash, which I'd never played. I enjoyed it (and not only because I won); got some glimpses of interesting strategies to try in future games of it. Sadly, my colleague who was going to bring Pandemic didn't come to the party. Interesting side note: someone else told me that the person who designed that game lives and works near here. (The game store where I ordered it told me a month ago that shipments had been delayed another month. I should call them and see if it's in yet.)

Got a Friend request on Facebook from a good friend from high school who I've been out of touch with for something like 20 years. This is about the third time that's happened; very neat. Now if only I could manage to actually respond to emails from said friends. (If any of you are reading this, I apologize for my inability to handle correspondence.)

Looked around online for ways to buy a Wii Fit without paying double the normal price. Turns out a Best Buy near here is getting a shipment on Sunday; we'll see if I can get there before they sell out.

Tuesday night, I went to bed around 2 a.m. I was awakened at about 4:15, to what I was sure was loud knocking at my front door. I couldn't cope; turned over and went back to sleep. This is the second or third time that's happened in the past couple weeks; I still don't know whether I just dreamed the knocking or not. Though it seems likely that it was a dream. Anyway, woke up again sometime around 6:30 to what I was sure was the sound of someone walking around in my house. Eventually convinced myself it wasn't, but by then I was awake, so I stayed up. Which helps explain why I was so thoroughly exhausted last night when I wrote most of this entry, although it doesn't explain why I'm similarly exhausted tonight. Must get some solid sleep at some point.

Final paragraph from last night's version of this entry: I'm sure there's plenty more I could say here, but I need to go reboot my computer now that the backup's done running. And anyway, I've been having a hard time keeping my eyes open for at least the last half-hour, so I really oughtta go sleep. More news as it develops.

I like the image this creates, of some wornout poltergeist trying desperately to figure out what it has to do so that you finally acknowledge you’re being haunted, dammit! Soon you will get a complaint from the Ectoplasmic Citizens Union.
