Will no one rid me of this troublesome cough?

I've had this cold for two weeks now, and the cough for most of that time, and I'm ready to be done with it.

I gather that I'm not alone in this--sounds like lots of people have had long-lingering colds and/or coughs lately.

Various over-the-counter medications always say to see a doctor if the symptoms persist for more than a week, but I think my colds usually last more than a week. I usually don't go see a doctor until about two weeks in, at which point the doctor invariably tells me that it's a cold and it'll go away on its own.

Ah, well, nothing to be done. Nothing but cough, that is.

Achoo! I feel your pain. I have been plagued by yucky cough/congestion and even the occasional fever (it seems to come and go) since Thanksgiving! I’ve been alternating my over-the-counter remedies. Some days I take Dayquil, more recently I have been using sudafed: it has the best decongestant AND I can use it to make crystal-meth! I kind of agree with the claims that phenylephrine doesn’t do me much good; I want my pseudoephedrine! The worst part is I’m really stressed out, but I don’t feel comfortable taking Ambien (I’m not really sure I’m that comfortable taking it anyway) with all of this other stuff, so I’m not sleeping. I really and truly hope you manage to get rid of this, and have all of my sympathy.

Sadness! It sound like you’ve got it a lot worse (and have had it a lot longer) than I. Sorry to hear that.

For sleeping, I’ve been rotating through three remedies: (1) NyQuil gelcaps; (2) a combination of Benadryl and melatonin; (3) cough syrup with codeine. (I’m switching among them because I tend to quickly develop a tolerance for NyQuil and Benadryl, such that they affect me much less if I take them too many nights in a row.) Don’t know if any of those would be useful in your situation, but they might fit with the sudafed better than Ambien does? Dunno. I’m not a doctor, of course; just speculating.

Anyway, hope you feel better (and get some sleep) soon!
