Cheerful

I have been unaccountably cheerful for no clear reason this morning.

A few of the factors that might've contributed:

  • Still enjoying Cold Comfort Farm (the book) quite a bit (am about halfway through); it keeps making me laugh.
  • Pleasing political news—the DADT stuff I mentioned last entry, the Illinois civil unions stuff I haven't gotten around to posting about.
  • Singing “Gaudeamus Hodie” (which always makes me smile) in the shower and getting nice bass resonances.
  • Bougainvillea flowers outside my living room.
  • My lawn is looking really nice lately, thanks to Twig.
  • I keep being struck by the vivid orange and red and yellow leaves on trees around here. I don't think of us as normally getting fall colors, but maybe I just haven't paid enough attention in previous years, 'cause they're pretty nice.
  • After a few years of relative paucity of SH stories being reprinted, we're seeing five of them reprinted in the two Year's Bests whose contents have been announced so far.
  • Catchy music on the radio on the way to work. I suppose it is wrong of me to like Taylor Swift's songs as much as I do.
  • Tasty beets at lunch.

Interestingly, I think the good mood came first, and the above items are just reinforcing it.

I can imagine a day almost exactly like today in which I started out in a bad mood and either didn't notice the above items at all or saw them as tiny bright spots in an otherwise bad day. I got off to a late start again; the sky is gray and gloomy; there's too much on my to-do list. . . . There are all sorts of things that, if my mood were bad, I might use as evidence to myself that today is a Bad Day with some small bright spots.

But looked at through the lens of a mysterious good mood, today appears to be a Good Day with some minor flaws.

I think Taylor Swift often has catchy tunes and clever lyrics, so. :^)

Re Taylor Swift: I’m glad it’s not just me! It’s happened at least a dozen times in the past year that I’ll turn on the radio and there’ll be a catchy song on and I’ll wonder who’s singing it and then it’ll turn out to be Taylor Swift.

I like Taylor Swift. I finally decided it’s not even a guilty pleasure. She writes most of her own material, which I respect greatly, and she performs it well. Her songs make me want to write YA fiction.

It makes me happy that you’re happy.

There is something irreducible about moods, something rational analysis can’t touch. I’ve started trying to pay attention so that I can distinguish stimuli from response, ephemeral from durable. Or at least to try throwing some reliably positive stimuli in to see whether it switches my mood upwards. Thank you for reminding me of music and beets. And yay reprints!

Sumana: Agreed re moods. And yes re reliably positive stimuli; I occasionally remember to do things like listen to particular songs when I need to change my mood, but I sometimes forget.

There’s something to be said for the “fake it ’til you make it” approach to being mildly euphoric. 🙂 🙂

textjunkie: 🙂 Vaguely relatedly: I’ve heard that smiling tends to make people happier, but I don’t know whether there’s any truth to that.

Yeah, there are various studies that smiling makes you happier. E.g.: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=smile-it-could-make-you-happier

Also studies that if you (unrelatedly) nod while listening to an argument, you’re more likely to agree.
