Sir, I exist!

I was thinking about this poem the other day, in the context of certain kinds of human interactions. No time right now to discuss that, though, so for now I'll settle for just posting the poem, which is from Stephen Crane's 1899 “War Is Kind and Other Lines”:

A man said to the universe:

“Sir, I exist!”

“However,” replied the universe,

“The fact has not created in me

A sense of obligation.”
