Nigerian English
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the variety of different Englishes that are spoken around the world, and at some point I hope to write more about that. But for now, just a couple of resources about a specific English:
As a US English speaker who sometimes reads fiction written by Nigerians, I’ve been wishing for good resources about Nigerian English. I recently found some that look useful:
- “Nigerian English: History, functions and features” (2025), by Kingsley O. Ugwuanyi and Sopuruchi Christian Aboh (published in World Englishes, “an English language and linguistics journal dedicated to empirical research on the global context of Englishes in the cultural, linguistic, and social realms.”)
- Introduction to Nigerian English in the Oxford English Dictionary, part of their World English Hub.
- Nigerian English article in Wikipedia.
