Bad timing

Sigh. I ordered a spiffy new toy on the morning of Friday the 10th; I was told it would be shipped in 7 days, by 2-day-delivery FedEx. Only of course it turns out that that meant it would be shipped in 7 business days; in fact, it wasn't shipped until late afternoon yesterday, 11+ days after I placed the order. It was shipped from Sacramento, so I thought perhaps it wouldn't take a full 48 hours to get here; I was heartened to see on the FedEx tracking page that it had reached Oakland by 1:00 a.m. this morning. No problem, thought I, it can't take more than a few more hours.

But no. At 1:00 p.m., the tracking page updated to indicated that the item was being "held" in Oakland. I called to inquire, and was told that there's no chance it'll arrive at my door 'til midafternoon tomorrow, and that there's no way I can pick it up in person before then.

I'm leaving for the airport (for WisCon) at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, so I won't be here to receive it tomorrow afternoon.

If I'd realized it would take a full 48 hours to get from Sacramento to my place by FedEx, I could have driven up there and picked it up. And if I'd ordered it a day earlier, as I almost did, I'd have it by now.

But instead, my package is going to languish in some FedEx office somewhere for the next five or six days, 'til I'm back and can be home to receive it. Argh.

Nobody ever accused me of having good timing.
