Celebraday

Today is Father's Day; it wasn't 'til I read Mary Anne's journal entry today that it quite occurred to me that a bunch of my friends are now fathers. In fact, for some of them today is their first Father's Day as a father. So happy Father's Day, in no particular order, to Ed, David, Paul M, Paul W, Jean, Steve, Pär, Tad, Stewart, Castor, Geoff, Brian, Rick, Elyon, and probably others I'm not thinking of. (I suppose the brevity of that list makes it clear that I don't have kids myself; if I did, I'm sure I would know too many parents to mention.) Oh, yes, and also to my own father. I'll have to try to remember to call him today.

Today is also Bloomsday. No, not Lilac Bloomsday; rather, the day on which James Joyce's Ulysses is set. Joyce wrote: "I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality." Mark Woods's blog has many fine links and lots of cool info about Bloomsday today, including a table (put together by Joyce) of correspondences between characters/episodes in The Odyssey, scenes in Ulysses, organs of the body, symbols, and so on.

Which reminds me that another fine story in Meet Me in the Moon Room is "Rejoice," a very nice combination of Joyce and Frankenstein, featuring (among other things) a dog named Mucho Poocho who wears long black evening gloves.

More later.
