Thanks, Jim!

The latest installment of Jim Kelly's Asimov's column On the Net is now available online at the Asimov's site. (I'm still unclear about when those columns get posted—they sometimes seem to appear online well before they appear in the print magazine.)

This time, Jim's talking about slipstream. He talks with Jeff VanderMeer and Rich Horton about what exactly the term means (as usual, there's not much agreement). He points to Fantastic Metropolis, and then he quotes Alan DeNiro's excellent essay "The Dream of the Unified Field." Then he goes on to quote editorials by Mary Anne and me, and points to some writers we've published: Aynjel Kaye, Ben Rosenbaum, Jenn Reese, Jay Lake, Tim Pratt, and Timons Esaias.

I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again: that Kelly guy is a class act. Not only is he an excellent writer, but he's been, and continues to be, incredibly supportive of new writers and new venues. I hereby reiterate my hope that when we all become Big Names we'll be as welcoming to newcomers.

Holy cow!! Strange Horizons kicks all kinds of ass! Did you give them names, Jed? How did my name end up on that list?

🙂 Nope, I didn’t give him names; had no idea he was gonna do this. I’m guessing the writers he listed this time were the ones whose work at SH he felt best embodied slipstream. Or possibly writers he just particularly likes. Or possibly writers he just particularly likes to watch. Not sure. 🙂

Jim mentioned the column to me at Worldcon, I was quite delighted to find this online at some point after I got home… and, for what it’s worth, it’s in the December issue which is on the stand now…
