Family letters: 1978
And all of the 1978 letters, which is everything that I’ve posted so far. This batch includes our move to Palo Alto!
- May 31, 1978
- Marcy writes on a bunch of different topics, including how Jay and Jed are doing, car troubles, considering moving, Proposition 13, Peter’s job, Marcy’s illness, the impending birth of a cousin, and more.
- “this morning I noticed that the world was kind of polluted, so I cleaned it up and polished it, and now it goes around quite merrily. I put a special shine on Alaska for you, and wiped the international date lihe particularly well. I had always thought God made the world, and was a little surprised to find it said Rand McNally down in the Pacific Ocean.”
- July, 1978
- In which Peter gets a new job, programming for Oroweat! …also, “A condition of the job is that we move to the Palo Alto / Menlo Park area, so we’ll be busy packing & moving in the next 2 weeks.”
- July 26, 1978
- Marcy talks about packing to move, and various other news.
- “Jed won the American Legion Award (a medal & certificate) for an essay on Americanism […] How’s that for naches?”
- August 9, 1978
- Peter sends sympathies to George after (I think) some kind of car accident.
- “I phoned in a prayer that your suffering be relieved […] & your life filled with Light.”
- September 7, 1978
- Marcy lets G&H know that we’re settling in to our new house in Palo Alto.
- “Our house-mates are truly lovely, he’s involved in solar energy, she works in a flower nursery, and their little girl is as sweet as can be (she’s 7) and it sure makes it affordable, and fills the spaces. We’d really rattle in this huge house.”
- October 31, 1978
- A Halloween update from Marcy, describing her Japan trip and how things were going in Palo Alto, including lots of flowers and other plants.
- “We are so fortunate to have this place - we pay 260 for half the house, and one-bedroom apartments start at $300. Near where Peter’s office is you can rent a 2-bedroom apartment with deck and jacuzzi and pool for $2000 a month.”
- December-ish, 1978
- A thank-you-and-we’re-super-busy note from Marcy.
- “Working for Ken (the space peace-keeping project) at $6 an hour, but he wants me to type and it’s sending me up the walls - even on his lovely selectric I’m no typist.”
