Violence against nerds
~Oh, joy.~ The Washington Post ran an article last week which (presumably in a misguided attempt at humor) advocates beating up nerds, geeks, and dweebs in the schoolyard. The article's all mixed up—it conflates smart kids, overachievers, nerdy kids, D&D players, goody-goodies, and straightlaced mainstream kids, all of whom it says are bad and need to be stopped because they're not rebellious or interesting enough. And apparently, the blame for this horrible state of affairs can be laid squarely at the feet of Harry Potter.
(The one valid point made in the article is just how white Harry Potter is. That's a phenomenon worth exploring and discussing. But the article just uses it as a sideswipe in passing.)
