Weekend update

Some things I did this weekend, including several that I had not planned to do, in no particular order:

  • Spent the whole weekend at home, avoiding social opportunities as much as possible. Was really desperately in need of some uninterrupted alone-time. In fact, turned off my phone for most of the weekend to better manage interruptions, though wasn't very successful in that regard.
  • Read nearly 40 submissions; am now all caught up on submission-reading for the first time in ages.
  • Sent three story acceptance letters.
  • Did a couple loads of laundry.
  • Put some books back on bookcases. Still have many more to go. (This is from taking them down to move bookcases around weeks ago.)
  • Finished reading Alison Bechdel's "graphic memoir" Fun Home. Quite good, very much worth reading. And a fast read.
  • Re-read "Time Considered as a Helix of Semiprecious Stones" (more on that later).
  • Upgraded SH forum software (actually did this Thursday night, but that took up a fair bit of my planned submission-reading time that night, which is part of why I had so many stories to read over the weekend--the other part being, of course, that I was already way behind). (The forum is not quite ready to reopen to the public yet, but I'm hoping it will be in the next couple days.)
  • Improved part of the SH fiction-sub database interface, learning some useful JavaScript in the process.
  • Spent a couple of hours dealing with an unexpected emergency email outage at SH this evening due to Pair shutting down our mail-processing system. (If anyone tried to send any mail to SH this afternoon, you should check on whether your mail arrived safely. This includes submitting stories via the RTF submission form; we only received 3 stories on Sunday, so I'm guessing between 4 and 10 stories bounced, without any notification to the submitter, while our system was down.)
  • Read more of Dorothy Allison's book of essays, Skin.
  • Continued reading bits and pieces of Learning Perl Objects, References & Modules in spare moments.
  • Had to reboot after Cyberduck (SFTP application) hung/crashed while quitting (leaving things in a state where I could move my mouse pointer but couldn't do anything at all, including force quit), which lost me several open/unrecorded Safari windows. (Probably a fluke rather than Cyberduck's fault, but still annoying.)
  • Read various interesting online discussions and kerfuffles from a couple weeks ago, that I missed at the time.
  • Took a couple of much-needed but too-brief naps.
  • Bought advance tickets to the July 4 show of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind in Chicago. (Did I mention I'm going to Chicago next weekend?)
  • Noted that Lola has arrived safely in France and Mary Anne has arrived safely home.
  • Practiced poi now and then in the interstices between other things. Hit myself with them a lot. Was glad not to be using fire.

Some things I didn't do this weekend that I'd hoped to do, or at least considered doing:

  • Editing. Still way behind on that.
  • General fiction-department administrative stuff.
  • Dishes.
  • Taking out the trash.
  • Mowing the lawn.
  • Lunch with Naomi.
  • Going to any Pride-related events in SF at all.
  • Reading and replying to many many important backlogged emails.
  • Reading works-in-progress from two people who've asked me to look at things.
  • Getting a hotel room for next Saturday night.
  • Writing any of a dozen in-progress journal entries.
  • Watching various Netflix items.
