1986, January 4: Letter from Jay to G&H

One-page letter, handwritten on lined three-hole-punched paper.

1-4-86

Dear Grandma & Grandpa,

Thank you very much for the money and the food. I used the money to go play golfxxx with my friends a couple of days ago. The food was delicious, especially the lefsa. (is that how you spell it?) I like to melt butter on top of one and roll it up before I xxx eat it. I have done several things this vacation that I have been meaning to do for a long time, like get my car fixed, find out about insurance for it, and clean my xxx room.

Right now, I am training very hard for the San Jose Marathon, on February eigth. It will be my first marathon and my only goal is to run the whole way, with stopping at all. I am not good enough to aim for a specific time, yet. I am also looking forward to track season, which starts in March.

Once again, thank you for the presents.

Love,

Joaquin

Jay didn’t have his license yet (he was not yet 16), but he did have a learner’s permit (which you could get at age 15½), and apparently he also had a car.
