In which Marcy asks for a bike, talks about carrot juice, and gives brief kid news. “Jed & Peter both have short haircuts & neither has a beard any more.”
Peter tells his brothers what we’ve been up to in Berkeley. “o wow--we’ve finished moving! our incredible! accumulation! of household furnishings, ‘etc.’ (o so much ‘etc.’…)”
In which Marcy thanks a cousin of Helen’s for a gift of Canadian money. And then tells her the lost-Gospel-of-John story. “We both think that Canadian money is a much more suitable gift than U.S., as it’s prettier.”
In which Marcy gives general life updates, and Peter waxes enthusiastic about a wine-shop.
“[Jed is] now able to handle being all sorts of imaginary persons[…]”
In which Peter quotes poetry from his physics textbook, and alludes to some kind of conflict with George and Helen. “Human beings […] do not like to have their settled opinions changed by a newcomer who proves he is right. Far from being pleased at being shown something new, they are angry to find their beliefs upset, particularly if those beliefs have been firmly established in childhood —— their sense of security is assailed.”
In which Marcy writes about the war in Vietnam, the materialism of Christmas, and the importance of staying connected with family. “our major investments should be in how we feel towards each other.”
In which Peter writes about what he’s been up to—school, Shaklee, etc. “dropped […] the functions of a complex variable course because of not having quite enough prerequisites (I could follow the proofs but not make them up myself… yet)”
A birthday note to George. “a friend says my handwriting is quite pretty—too bad she can’t read it”
In which Marcy lists assorted things that we’d been up to, including our first Easter egg hunt, and making and eating vichysoisse, and dealing with pet illness. “Joaquin ‘found’ one, nice bright delightful colors, very disappointing to find icky ol’ hardboiled egg inside. Jed got two, one of which he’d hid himself…”
A Mother’s-Day thank you, a couple of poems, and an update on Jay’s weaning status. “How can a respectful former-almost-English-major do such a wicked thing?”
