A thank-you note from Peter after our visit. “thank you so much not only for your putting [up with us / us up] for a week, but for your loving & thoughtful presents/presence.”
Peter sympathizes with a burn that George or Helen had recently experienced, and tells them that Johrei would have helped. “So sorry to hear of your burn, I know it is one of the most painful injuries.”
A thank-you note from me, and a request for a scarf. “several of my friends in a club I belong to have long, woolly scarves and when I ask where to get one, they say they had them knitted by relatives.”
Jay describes what he’s been up to and what his plans are for the impending school year, which will be his first year of high school. “I have been doing four to five paper routes, and I’ve been making a lot of money, so I’ve decided to start saving for a car.”
Jay writes to George about football and the impending Super Bowl. “Stanford Stadium is just down the street, and a few friends and I are going to hang around the stadium on Super Sunday.”
A thank-you note from Jay, plus more about sports. “My friends and I are going to go to the pizza parlor today, get a couple of large pizzas, and see the Niners and the Giants game.”
Peter writes about what he’s up to, his job at GRiD, and how he spends his time. “that Sunday NY Times crossword is the one I like best, and it usually satisfies me for a week.”
A thank-you note from Jay. “I ran a 5:11 mile in the time trials, which is pretty good for a preseason time, especially since I’m only a freshman.”
A letter from me about what I was up to at the end of the summer before my senior year of high school. “Every book in the store, except for some very old or rare ones, is half price, and they have quite a large selection. Also, by being an employee, I get an extra 10% discount.”
A thank-you-and-what-I’m-up-to note from Jay, age 15. “I am training very hard for the San Jose Marathon[…] It will be my first marathon and my only goal is to run the whole way.”
